English words come from all over the world.
France. Germany. Scandinavia. Turkey. China….
They also come from sports.
Care to guess which sport has made the biggest contribution to English?
THE MAJOR LEAGUES
I used to teach a lawyer in Prague.
His passion was baseball.
Unfortunately, when he was a kid, the commies were in power and baseball was definitely frowned upon.
But later, he passed on his passion for baseball to his son.
In fact, his son got so good, he earned a baseball scholarship to an American university.
And after university, he played professionally in the minor leagues.
That means he was good.
But not good enough for the major leagues.
That’s for teams like the New York Yankees, the Orioles, the Red Socks, etc.
LET’S PRACTICE
Now you know what the major leagues are.
Here are some common expressions in English:
What kind of a mistake is a major league mistake?
If the new singer has major league talent, how talented is she?
If the tax office finds out you haven’t paid your taxes for the last ten years, what kind of trouble will you be in?
