Kick.
It’s Atomic Word # 1,791.
I know you know the literal meaning.
As in, Chuck Norris kicked me in the head.
But do you know all the phrasal verbs and idioms with this common verb?
This week, we’re gonna talk about “kick.”
And to kick off our discussion, we’ll start with….
A SPORTS METAPHOR
Have you ever watched American football?
How does the game begin?
First, they flip a coin.
The winner of the coin toss chooses if they want to start on offense or defense.
Then, the two teams go to opposite sides of the field.
And to start the game, the team on defense kicks the ball over to the team on the other side of the field.
That’s the kick off.
HERE’S HOW TO USE IT
“But Mr. Vig, I don’t play American football. Why do I need to know this?”
Because, as a metaphor, we use “kick off” all the time.
Here are some recent headlines from the news:
Musk says Tesla, SpaceX, xAI chip project to kick off in Texas
U.S. War Planes and Helicopters Kick Off Battle to Reopen Hormuz
Holy Week Processions In Valladolid, Spain Kick Off With Palm Sunday Celebrations
So what does “kick off” mean?
Cheers,
Mr. Vig
