What a strange word.
Do you have any idea what it means?
Yes, it’s short for “Yankee”, which is what Southerners call Northerners in the US (and what non-Americans call all Americans).
But I want to talk about a different, more common meaning.
FORGOTTEN WORDS
This week, we’re learning some very useful words.
But you won’t find them in any textbook.
And you won’t find them in the Atomic Word Dictionary.
That’s why I call them “forgotten.”
And our second forgotten word is…
YANK
“He yanked the door open.”
“She yanked the charger out of the wall.”
“The dog yanked the leash.”
“Someone yanked my backpack from behind.”
What does it mean?
It means “to pull.”
But how?
Hard or soft?
Hard.
But if you read the news in English, you’ll see it used another way.
Here’s a headline you might find interesting:
“Trump administration threatens to yank state funds over truckers’ English proficiency”
What does that mean?
Tell me in the comments what you think it means.
And I’ll tell you the answer in Wednesday’s Atomic Homework.
TOMORROW: Super-Useful Forgotten Conversation Word #3
Cheers,
Mr. Vig
P.S.
How about another idiom?
It’s very common.
And it uses “yank.”

I guess: The state (Trump’s) administration plans to stop financing, subsidizing truck businesses due to weak English speaking skills of truck drivers/owners
To stop paying for.
I think it means that he Trump administration don’t want to give anymore social money to the truckers because their level of english is too low
Truck drivers who don’t speak English will not receive state support.
