Hello from my second (first?) home.
I’m back in the US for a few weeks visiting family.
And this weekend I was exploring the attic in my father’s house.
That’s the small room at the top of the house where people store boxes and old things.
Guess what I found?
MEMORIES FROM HIGH SCHOOL
In the U.S., schools have a tradition called “yearbooks.”
At the end of the year, you get a book of photographs of students and faculty, and you ask your classmates to sign it.
I opened a yearbook from high school.
But I quickly closed it.
Not a lot of good memories.
I opened another yearbook from another school.
I was about to close that one, too, but then I remembered: this was the school where I met Alisa Edwards.
I liked Alisa.
A lot.
So I had a look at her picture.
I hadn’t seen her picture, or even thought of her, for a decade or more.
But suddenly, all those teenage feelings of nervousness, shyness and insecurity returned.
I flipped to the back page and found what she had written.
Most girls write boring things in yearbooks.
“Have a nice summer.”
“See you next year.”
Alisa had written, “Call me!”
And then she wrote her number.
Wow!
I had totally forgotten about that.
Except, guess what 14-year-old, shy, insecure Mr. Vig did NOT do that summer?
Call her!
And the next year I went to a new school and never saw her again.
The English word for that is…
REGRET
I don’t have a lot of regrets, but now I can add this to my short list.
I regret not calling Alisa.
It’s a cliché, but life moves fast and you’re only young once.
How does this relate to your English?
Well, I’ve heard from more than one student that English is a regret.
They regret not giving it more time and focus.
They regret not being able to get a better job, meet new people, travel, talk to new family members…
If English is also your regret, here’s how I can help:
