“Where do you want to eat?” I asked.
“I don’t know. Where do you want to eat?” asked my friend.
Just then, an old man approached us.
He introduced himself as “Uncle George.”
And in his broken English, invited us to have dinner at his house.
He promised his wife would cook us a homemade meal.
“What do you think?” I asked my friend.
“Sure. Why not. Sounds like an adventure,” my friend said.
“Can we pay by card, Uncle George?” my friend asked.
“Yes. You come.” he said.
So we followed him into the old town, down winding streets, past two-story buildings made centuries ago by hand.
Finally, we arrived at his home and sat down outside on the porch.
“Welcome. I am Mama Lili,” said Uncle George’s wife.
She recommended a Bulgarian pork dish.
We said “Ok.”
“And a water,” said my friend.
But she didn’t stop there.
She wanted us to eat and drink more.
So she kept bringing us more and more food.
“A free winter salad!”
“Free garlic bread!”
She also kept bringing us more and more to drink.
First, a juice drink she called “a vitamin bomb.”
Then, “You like rakiya?” she asked.
“I don’t drink alcohol,” my friend said.
“I don’t drink on Tuesdays,” I said.
So she brought us two rakiyas.
“Free rakiya for you!” she said.
Finally, we had enough and managed to stop her from bringing dessert.
“We would like to pay now,” my friend said.
“Ok,” said Mama Lili. “Cash only.”
Cheers,
Mr. Vig
