“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
Who said that?
It was a famous American.
I’ll tell you in a sec.
But first, I want to amend it.
Nothing is certain, except death, taxes and…
EVERYTHING’S GETTING MORE EXPENSIVE!
I had to stay at a hotel my first night back in the U.S.
A cheap 2-star motel on the side of the highway was over $100 a night!
A better motel with fewer bad reviews was over $200 a night!
Ouch.
And now my landlord in Prague wants to end my lease contract early and raise my rent.
Not a little — a LOT!
17%, to be exact.
What to do?
Move? (I hate moving.)
Or stay and pay?
What would you do?
Cheers,
Mr. Vig
P.S.
It was Benjamin Franklin who said the quote about death and taxes.
Have you ever heard someone in the movies say, “It cost me a Benjamin”?
Want to know what it means?
What U get for that + 17%? More space, better service? I would definitely bargain with the landlord to let him cut it, let’s say, in half.. 8% seems reasonable..but perhaps someone from that location in Prague should comment if it’s a ‘normal’ tactic.
I think, it mean that it cost 100 dollar because there is Benjamin Franklin on this banknote.
I would try to bargain. Start with 10%, but expect it could end up at 15%. Try to round the amount.
But do that only if you’re happy with this apartment. If not, try to find a new one, but you have to be quick. Additionally, a new landlord can raise the price after some time too. It’s a vicious circle. So, we come to the point when people start thinking of buying an apartment. Of course, only if you are staying in Prague long term. That’s just my perspective, based on how renting works here in Croatia. I know Prague is very expensive for rent and it’s not easy to find a suitable apartment.
