Here’s a good question I got from a reader:
“What is the difference between the prefixes “in” and “un”? Why don’t we say “unefficient”?
Did you know…
The English language has nine ways to make a word negative?!
What fun!
Who wants to learn an easy language?
So how to choose?
Here’s the short answer:
You can’t learn one simple rule because there isn’t one.
So how do English speakers know which prefix to use?
Their ears tell them!
Does “unefficient” sound good to you?
If it does, then keep listening every day until your ears tell you, “That sounds terrible!”
Cheers,
Mr. Vig
P.S.
Did you know…
- Two prefixes are used in 75% of the time. Focus on these two and you’ll save a ton of time.
- If you know what French sounds like you can usually guess which prefix to use.
