This week, we’re talking about common abbreviations.
Abbreviations are shorter versions of longer words words.
Example: legit > legitimate
Here are yesterday’s headlines without the abbreviations:
University Professor Sacked Over Sexy Internet Pictures
Business Executives Reveal New Government Collaboration
New Statistics: AI Robots Now 50% of Customer Representatives
Did you get them right?
Ready for some more?
ULTRA COMMON
Here’s our last group.
These are so common, you probably didn’t even know they were abbreviations.
So what’s the original word?
“I’m going to the gym.” (gym is short for ______?)
“Let’s get a burger.” (burger is short for _____?)
“Put it in the fridge.” (fridge is short for ______?)
“Download an app.” (app is short for _____?)
“Take the metro; it’s faster.” (metro is short for _____?)
“Take a photo with your phone!” (photo is short for _____? phone is short for ____?)
THE WORST
But not all abbreviations are good.
Some sound downright terrible.
I remember, many years ago, visiting a college friend in California.
He said, “Let’s get some brekky.”
I said, “What the hell is ’brekky?’”
“Breakfast,” he said.
“Ooof,” I said. “That’s terrible.”
Please don’t ever say that word.
Also on my do-not-say list:
Vacay (vacation)
Merch (merchandise)
Fave (favorite)
Have a great weekend!
