“Never use…a jargon word.”
-George Orwell
————————
This week we’re tearing apart a truly awful piece of writing.
And in the process, hopefully you’re learning how to be a better writer.
Let’s coninue with Rule #2….
No Jargon
Jargon is technical language that only people in your industry know.
For example, English teachers love to tell students “I have a “TEFL certificate.”
But usually only English teachers know what that means. (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)
And that’s the problem with jargon – most people don’t understand it!
Here are four examples of jargon I found in our email disaster.
See if you can translate each into plain, simple, clear English.
Post your answers on the blog.
And I’ll give you my translations tomorrow.
Jargon Translation Homework
1. “best-in-class member services”
2. “workspace community“
3. “sustainable economic terms”
4. “today’s market conditions”
1. “best-in-class member services”= premium services, I suppose
2. “workspace community“= common space at WeWork or the community of coworkers a WeWork, I don’t know…
3. “sustainable economic terms”=terms in the contract that ensure them to be profitable enough to continue their business for a long time?
4. “today’s market conditions”= today’s state of offers and demands in their activity (not sure it’s more clear than the quoted words…)
As only 20 hours to Championship IHF in Ice hockey, let’s ads some Jargon:
‘kdo neskáče není Čech’
who is reds, blues, cross etc.. 🙂
slovenskoooooo
I get it.! Some words are metaphors, another words are a jargon language and better don’t use them .I have no knowledge in the corporate domain so I supose don’t know to translate these jargon terms.
1. “best in class member services”
2. “workplace community”
3. “sustainable economic conditions”
4. “today’s market conditions”
1.Best in class member services = the personal ho attend the best results ( ho attend the Objectifs /
or the best services?
2. Work space community = open workspaces
3. Sustainable économique terms= a terms mandatory of contract
4. Today’s market conditions= the valid conditions
????!!
I suppose!!!
I try to understand but it’s too hard to catch the meaning.
1. “best-in-class member services” – to provide best services to its customers in the same businesses
2. “workspace community“ v- people who work together in the same place/environment
3. “sustainable economic terms” / profitable
4. “today’s market conditions” – difficult current market condition
1. “Top-quality services for members”
2. “A community of people who share a workspace”
3. “Economic terms that can be kept up for a long time”
4. “What’s happening in the market right now”
Something to try:
1. good services
2. common areas
3. said economically
4. market opportunities
Cheers.
1. “best-in-class member services”
What do you need? Ask to us and we will help you
2. “workspace community“
A good place with wonderful people. Let’s go! And be a member now.
3. “sustainable economic terms”
If you wanna believe in sustainability, you can try, step by step with our people
4. “today’s market conditions”
The world was change, so the market too. Take a contact with us and you could finding interesting opportunities
I think the special word useable for example in dentist, haspital, shipping , etc
1. “best-in-class member services”= The best services to members in each class 2. “workspace community“ = Community of workers in the same space 3. “sustainable economic terms”=Sustainable terms of economy 4. “today’s market conditions”= Conditions of market today
Here is my idea:
1. Best-in-class member services = only if you are a member, you will receive the best service in class.
2. Workspace community = part of community of people with the same proffession.
3. Sustainable economic terms = nothing new, nothing is changed.
4. Today’s market conditions = This conditions are valid only today, hurry up!
BTW: When my son was about 8 years old, the teacher gave him the same homework. The result was very funny! I remember it with smile!
Maybe now it is the same with our homework.
1. “best-in-class member services” = provide you the best in this sector/area
2. “workspace community“ = company providing place/room for your work
3. “sustainable economic terms” = conditions that do not lead to bankruptcy of the company
4. “today’s market conditions” = to earn as much as we need in today´s world
I think:
1. in the world of services, you get the best in this category;
2. good working climate and communication;
3. the company works in an economic environment where sustainability is considered;
4. according to the latest trend.
If I understood what it mean, I wouldn’t have to learn English anymore.
Hi Ryan !
I don’t know economic terms !
Have a nice weekend !
YOU are great! Thank YOU!
best services in class member: we help the members to have quality services , to solve the problems , give them more attention and in genaral we are ready any time to help them
workspace community is similar like co-working, for examlpe we are working with other members in the common space, we change each other thoughts , we cooperate to solne the problems
sustainable economic terms means that we have good economy , the citizens live in a human conditions and they could deal the daily expenses
todays market conditions mention in conditions where exist in market today
“Best-in-class member services” = services the best in this branch of industry; “workspace community” = customers renting workspace (offices + equipment) of WeWork regularly; “sustainable economic terms” = unequivocally understandable solid terms of agreement; “today’s market conditions” = stagnation, uncertain future prospects, relatively high rate of inflation
Please hear me.
I don’t want to unsubscribe- mainly because I’m afraid of losing the course I bought from you- but I also don’t want to be inundated with daily mails.
