Yesterday I asked you to correct a sign in Prague.
“DIM SUM AT IT’S FINEST.”
After reading the comments, I see I need to explain two words.
First, Dim Sum.
One reader gave a good definition:
“Dim sum is a traditional Chinese dish (little dumplings)”
Next, “at its finest.”
This means, the best quality… the best you can find.
Now where’s the mistake?
It’s the apostrophe!
But before I tell you where it should (or shouldn’t) be, take a look at this sign with a different apostrophe mistake and see if you can figure out the rule:
Oh, and this sign was on a recent Ryanair flight I caught in London.
Tha’ts right – written by a native speaker!
Terrible.
Where is this world headed?! What’s next?!
Men fighting women in the Olympics?
The bar”s open.🤗
Mr. Vig, I need some time. I read your messages with interest. Thank you.
The bar is open = The bar’s open
Well, in my opinion,
BARS OPEN and THA’TS RIGHT are not mistakes, but a sort of tricks, language tricks that are meant to keep our attention on them, on their message, making us to act:
BARS OPEN…get in, drink something!!!
I’ve understand it so: Bars open=a lot of bars are open
Bar’s open=one bar is open
Isn’t it not correct?
Ryanair at its finest. One more reason why not use them.
Even in Slovakia there are lot off meaningless signs. Yes, the world is running to destruction. Competition at the Olympic is unfair ! The grand opening was not about sports or artists, but about vulgarism and amoral decadence.
I deeply agree with you.
That is such a great opportunity, to speak with the others about weather, wedding, holidays, foods, Adriatic sea and also other sea …..Greetings from Croatia
The bar is open. I wouldn’t shorten it.
There’s no logic to shortening it by one “i”.
And for the men fighting women in Olympics (or anywhere), it’s disgusting. Where are the feminists now ? Can’t they see it ?
I cannot believe what’s happening with people and hope all these unequal “sports” matches will be annulated (? ? – probably not correct expression but I’ll let it here ).
Dim sun at its (adjective) finest. It’s mean it is, verb.
Bar’s open mean the bar is open (verb to be open)
Tha’ts this is a mistake
That’s correct
Oh no, missing an apostrophe can make a big difference.
