Do you check your luggage when you fly?
Or do you carry it onboard with you?
For years, I never checked on my bag; I was afraid it wouldn’t arrive.
But this week, when I flew from Malta to Prague the woman at the check in counter told me my bas was too heavy and I had to check it in (too many souvenirs?).
“I have 50 minutes between flights. Is that enough time.”
“Oh yes, trust us,” she said.
I didn’t trust her.
And I removed everything I considered essential for survival in case the bag got lost: laptop, toothbrush, coffee, passport…
Now I was prepared.
I waved goodbye to my bag.
And when I arrived in Prague a few hours later, I got a text from the airline.
Can you guess what it said?
That’s right — my bag didn’t make the connecting flight.
But that’s ok, right? I had everything I needed in my carry on.
Except — I just remembered — one thing I forgot…
My apartment keys.
Woops.
yeah laptop goes always with you! As for the keys there are alternative ways of opening a door lately (biometric, keypad with a password or even RFID cards like the ones we use at a hotel room). But yeah I mean I am trying to avoid having a bag checked in. Not because I am afraid of missing my bag but because a checked bag means you have to wait for it later when you arrive and it could even mean a bigger delay sometimes even for hours to get your bag! So my advice is… travel lighter and keep your most valuable things always with you.
Hihi it is because the energy follow your thinking. Usually it is ok to find it when you arrive. Of course it is essential to have the most important things with you, like the keys 😉
Hi Ryan,
My goodness. And how did you get into your appartment?
I share your adventure. I had to flights, but there were not connected. The company call the flight “low cost” but it is everything else than “low cost”. They add a lot of costs and at the end you pay the same price as for a non “low cost” company. Never mind. The worse was that every time I have to check out and to check in, the flights were delayed and I had to run like a sportsman to catch the other flight and it was a question of seconds. No time to buy souvenirs. But from the scratch, they did not allow me to take a lot of stuff. So the same as you, I had yo leave behind some of my “things”, but hopefully I had my keys because on time at destination I had to take an “ailrliner” and the tramway to get to the parking where my car was to continue my travel to my home. So, shared feelings. Have a nice evening.
it has to be “two flights”, sorry for this “type” mistake
I experienced lost bag caused by short connection time. That is why I always have carryon with basic things in it in case of lost or late bag arrival. I would like to mention that even though your flight is direct from A to B destination this problem with lost bag might happen. Believe or not I had this kind of unpleasant experience flying with Lufthansa.
I think lately more and more lost bag situation happens for many reasons. Shortage of workers and crowds at airports. Good advice would to keep this in mind when traveling by airplane.
Hmm… what a bad luck. A good reminder for all us. Where the trouble is greatest, there help is nearest. Hopefully everything ended well for you and your souvenirs and keys have arrived home.
A so interesting story!
Deja vu, perhaps…!
Hi Ryan,
I understand you completely. If you have to pack urgently, of course you always forget something. The same thing happened to us. We once traveled from Sao Paulo to Budapest via Paris. Our suitcase stayed in Paris while we came home. At the airport, they promised to deliver the suitcase to our home within 1 day, which happened, but since then we only travel with small luggage.
It has happened. I have lost my luggage twice. Once I was told that my luggage was between Amsterdam and London. My plane had gone non-stop to London.
I’m curious to hear the end of this story… So far, I always preferred to carry only check-in luggage, but on the last trip, I had only 2 small carry-on bags, and I felt uncomfortable with that. It was a big challenging for me because usually I overpack my baggage… Fortunately, it was permitted to take more baggage on my way back home, and I bought a cabine suitcase until I was waiting for the second flight to home.
That’s called bad luck! More worries!
It was bad experience!
This is a very life story. I always worry about my luggage too. We trust air carriers with our lives, but we don’t trust their words about the safety of our luggage.. And, by the way, I once spent four days in Malta in Oktober in my warm autumn clothes, because my suitcase did not arrive right away..
Hello its been many days, but now i see it start to get warm. When I ready this lesson sound like some word take the mind in good prononciation of english.
Yes don’t trust the checking personal. I have lost one time my working luggage between two flights from Munich to Frankfurt and Hongkong. It was a big Metall Box with equipment for chemical analytics. And I had the next day a Flight from Hongkong to Taiwan. I had a lot of things to explain the personal at the Airport to get my luggage.
Greetings
