You’ve got to know when to hold ’em
Know when to fold ’em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
The Gambler
sung by Kenny Rogers

This week, we’re learning English vocabulary that came from poker.
According to Dr. Internet, poker is an old game that came from many countries.
But like pizza and rockets and Santa Claus, we imported it, made it better, put it in a few movies, and now the world thinks poker is American.
Fine with me.
Poker Word #3
Have you ever known someone who didn’t know when to fold?
For example…
I used to know a guy who would get a girl’s phone number and then start sending messages.
And even if the girl never responded, he would keep sending messages!
It was clear these girls were not interested.
But he just didn’t know when to give up.
He didn’t know when to fold.
And as Kenny says, you gotta know when to fold ‘em.
Cheers,
Mr. Vig
P.S.
The correct answer from yesterday’s quiz is…
Poker face!
Thank you very much
I like that song.
You also need to know when not to give up!
I found aut obout cauntry singer Kenny Roger, thank you. He singed very beautifull. When I was child we called no Santa Claus, but Mikulaš, or sometimes grandfather of frost. That is why I dont like globalization. I like diferences betwen cauntries. Now to topic – to fold. We in Slovakia often speak too – fold you here. It mean, on this place you put your own things.
Such a sad story. First there was one girl and then “these girls”? Tell me he’s happy in the end…
I didn’t know this from poker expression so it was very useful to learn the meaning of it.
Translating it by knowing the words wouldn’t give the correct meaning. There is a lot of such a kind of examples in any language where the meaning of words has bin changed according specific situation. In my language we call it transferred meaning.
How wise you are…
Climate change, the weather change…
I like very much Kenny,…this “old cowboy” with his calm and warm style of music…
I read your comments on your study on learning and went to the website .
In fact, that’s exactly right …. so I started to go for subtitled films that I then watch directly in VO. It’s great but also very easy to memorise.
There’s an attitude that I’ve observed with you and that I’m starting to apply. You speak slowly. It’s a good way of avoiding certain grammatical errors, but it also makes the lang uage easier. Vocabulary comes naturally.
But it’s not the same with the way other all people talk.
I live in a place with foreigners from all over the world. I find it very hard to understand some Americans …. and I can’t follow the conversation. I had the same experience in NY a few years ago.
What can I do to remedy this problem? Let my brain float!!! in a situation, I feel like I’m drowning! i don’t want to run !!!
Thank you very much hélène
To give up
Yes, our politicians😂! They don ´t know when to fold.
Do you know, that just now the EPT event (European Poker Turnament) is taking place in Prague, just in the context :-).
Thank you very much,it was very nice.
