How was your weekend?
I took a trip.
I drove about four hours north to meet a friend in a small town in Pennsylvania.
It’s an old town called “Jim Thorpe.”
What a strange name!
It used to be a mining town.
Now it’s full of tourists from New York and Philadelphia.
They call it “The Switzerland of America.”
I’m not sure why.
I didn’t see any big mountains or fondue.
Old Stores
Here’s an old store I spotted in the center of town:
These used to be quite common all across America.
Now, they’ve almost all disappeared.
So it was a surprise to find it.
Any idea what it is? What it sells? And how to pronounce the name?
Have a guess on the blog (no cheating with Google or AI!).
And I’ll tell you the full story tomorrow.
Plus, you’ll get the story behind the town’s strange name.
Mauch Chunk… I imagine the chunk is quite a big chunk of meal, probably meat. And mauch ? I’ve read about “munching on something” and think it’s chewing (on) something. So Mauch Chunk is Big Chunk of Meat for munching !…or maybe not… 😉
I would say MOH CHANK (in Serbian phonetic MOH ČANK)
Big table with someting to eat.
Hi,
We use the word « fondue » in France too.
When we go skiing, in the Alps, we eat delicious fondue. The recipe is popular in the mountains because they had the good cows for the best milk and cheese.
In Switzerland they have mountains too.
Mauch chunk ? I have no idea and I won’t go and cheat on AI 😀
I can’t wait the answer tomorrow.
I am just thinking about a chunk of Parmesan ( Italian cheese )
Mauch chunk has probably something to do with food ?
Hi, mining town, sorry it is borough with strenghe name. It sound like human name. We have mining town too, it is colled Mining Štiavnica and really visited tourists it. This store has nice entrance and shape of windows. Bilded from wood. I really like those old stores and restaurants too, in this old cool styl. I will be interest what it means numbers five and ten ? Maybe things for camping or rafting ? Probably now, it looks elegant…
In Germany I was sometimes in a “1€–Shop”, where everything was very cheap. Perhaps ‘Mauch Chunk 5 & 10″ is also a store, where you can ɓuy a lot of very cheap items. However, because of the increasing prices stores like “Mauch Chunk 5&10” are disappearing…🤷🏼♀️
Well, I have no idea what the name of the store mean and what kind of things it sells but I clearly spotted at least two ideas:
-mastering a new language is a long term goal
– you have two different pronunciation for the word ” behind”
Finally I look forward to hear the story of this Jim Thorpe wich have given the name of the town, aka “borough”.It would be the guy that have discovered the mine or maybe his owner?
Well, I don’t know… I’m developing my creativity and offering a theory:): Maybe it’s a weird spelling of mouth. So, like mouthful means mouth+chunk 🙂 Well, then you can choose between 5 or 10 mouthfuls.
And there’s no need to laugh so hard at me now!
[…] And you can still guess what’s in this Jim Thorpe store. […]
Maybe the city was only named after his death
[…] going to tell you what this picture is all […]
