Yesterday, I visited my mother.
She lives in an assisted living home because a few years ago she had a stroke and now she needs help taking care of herself.
Her helpers are mostly immigrants.
They come from Africa, South America and Europe.
My mother’s hobbies include watching television and correcting her helpers’ grammar.
CHRISTMAS DINNER DISCOVERY
After visiting with my mother, I went to a Christmas dinner at my cousin’s house.
I didn’t know her that well and was asking her what she did before she retired.
She said she traveled the world teaching government employees how to improve their English skills.
THE TEACHING GENE
And then there’s me.
I try not to correct my students (it doesn’t work and it’s demotivating).
But I do try to help them with their English.
Just like my mother.
And just like my cousin.
It must run in the family…

Thanks for your impressive sharing!
Hi Raymond!
I like to read your emails. You definitely have a good sence for writing.
Sorry your mother
s stroke and hope she has recovered relatively well. Its the same situation in Sweden as well. I mean moustly immigrants and not native Swedish that are working as home care helpers. So I understand your mother and her willigness to help us with English gramma :))
Happy holidays to you in your motherland!
Svetlana
