“Wow. This water is warm.”
“Yeah. It’s like swimming in a bathtub.”
“Hey, how come we’ve never been here before?”
“I don’t know. I didn’t even know it existed…”
Last week, my family rented a house on the shores of Lake Anna, here in Virginia.
It was me, my dad, my oldest sister, two nieces, a nephew, and two in-laws.
Thankfully, it was a big house.
Here’s a picture of my nephew jumping into the lake.

As you can see, it’s quite lovely.
It’s also only about 60 minutes from where I grew up.
Yet, as we say in English, it’s totally “off the radar.”
I can not remember one conversation where I heard the other person say, “I’m going to Lake Anna.”
Yet, it’s been here since the 1960s…
It’s like living in New York City and one day accidentally discovering Central Park…
Or like living in Kansas and one day discovering there’s a ski resort down the street…
Virginia has the Shenandoah River, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Atlantic Ocean, but almost no lakes…
This was a big mysteries and it needed to be solved!
So I went to Wikipedia for answers and here’s what I found.
“In 1968, Virginia Electric and Power Company…purchased 18,000 acres (73 km2) of farmlands…to provide clean, fresh water to cool the nuclear power generating plants…adjacent to the lake.”
Hmm. Could that be the reason this place isn’t more popular?
Are people afraid of radiation?
Fish with three eyes?
Future children with eleven toes?
Could people be so irrationally afraid of the invisible?
No, there must be another reason.
After all, this is America, “Land of the free and home of the brave.”
Right?
Watch a very funny video about this here:
