So why am I seeing British English everywhere!?
Here’s another sign I spotted in town:
And look how they spelled “shop”! Terrible! Actually, to be fair, it’s not really a mistake. That’s how the word was spelled 250 years ago in England. So why do some Americans still use the old English spelling? Are they slow? Lazy? Can they not afford to buy a new dictionary? No, it’s because Virginia used to be a part of the British Empire. And some businesses that want to keep an English atmosphere… or an old atmosphere… like this museum… keep the old English spelling. But isn’t the modern American spelling much better? 33% fewer letters! Fantastic! |
