The Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the West behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
That Georgia’s always on
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my mind
The Beatles
I first heard the Beatles White Album when I was a kid and kids still needed batteries to listen to music.
I probably thought Paul was singing about Georgia, USA, just a few hundred miles south of my home state, Virginia.
But since I first heard that song, Georgia has always been on my mind.
And now I’m here.
Obersvations so far:
Georgian is a Categor IV foreign language. I still can’t say “hello.”
In Athens, waiters and shop clerks greeted me in Greek. Here, everyone seems to know I’m not a local and their first words are always in English. (Is there a sign on my back? Did a secret memo circulate before my arrival?)
Hipsters, like covid, are everywhere. In less than 24 hours I was able to find their ghetto: craft beer, pour-over coffee, and laptops everywhere.
More later….
Fantastic
More you travel around the world, more you know people by their face. In case of waiters they meet tourists from different parts of the world in the faimos places like Athen.
