Saturday night I met a German nurse.
I told her I was a teacher.
She asked, “Are you qualified to teach?”
How I Became Unqualified
My first trip to Istanbul was nine years ago.
During that trip I met another English teacher.
He was a very successful teacher.
He told me I should study the linguist Dr. Stephen Krashen.
I did.
Here’s something Krashen wrote, ““Language acquisition does not happen by learning grammar rules.”
Wow.
I had never heard a language expert say that before.
That was the beginning of my journey to become unqualified.
For ten years I was a qualified teacher.
Then I became unqualified.
It was one of the best decisions of my life.
