The media got it wrong again!
Today I read this headline in the news:
“Amount of Dinosaur Fossils Increases.”
(or something like that)
And guess what?
It’s wrong!
It should be “Number of…”
Duh!
Everyone who has read English File For Beginners knows that “fossils” is countable and you use “number of” with countable nouns.
But do you want to learn how people should speak?
Or do you want to learn how native speakers actually speak?
NEWS UPDATE: Native speakers make this mistake allllll the time!
So if billions of educated and fluent English speaker are making a mistake, is it a mistake….?
I don’t think it’s wrong, it serves the target if the target audience understands that it is right.
I suppose they would like to write that the cost of fosiles îs High
And what about if it is a mistake?
Who cares about mistakes?
Exactly! (But I would say for you, in speaking, don’t worry about mistakes; but for professional news writers, they should have someone proofreading their writing.)
“Who cares about mistakes?”
That’s not the point.
The question is what is right.
