I travel a lot.
And everywhere I go in Europe I see this mistake:
Here it is again
See the mistake?
It’s the word “original.”
It means “unique.”
Here’s what dictionary.com says:
new; fresh; inventive; novel
For example…
An original painting….
An original song…
An original person…
What should they say?
Traditional.
Traditional means old, but in a good way.
A traditional Christmas song is Silent Night.
A traditional American dessert is apple pie.
And a traditional waffle or a traditional crepe.
What’s the real lesson here?
Mistakes are fine when you’re practicing.
But if you have a business and you’re about to create a sign…
Take ten seconds to grab a native speaker on the street and ask, “Hey, is this correct?”
Now THAT’S an original idea!
It”s very useful comment.
Thanks for notice😉
Enjoy Bulgary🤗
Excellent explanation. Thanks a lot.
Great idea and a new perspective
I know what îs kan original thing ,so really I donot understand where îs a mistake in what You write us.
Hi. “Original” means unique; there is nothing else in the world like it. But if a food recipe is old, then it’s “traditional.”
original is not new; fresh; inventive; novel
original is archetypal, prototype, initial, from origin=source, spring, fountain
It would be helpful if you added how the word original can be correctly used.
Ok. I’ll do that.
I very like your letters, thanks! 😍
Original. In many eastern languages original means specific, traditional, or authentic, so this is the confusion.
Yup. And that’s the origin of the confusion.
It’s interesting to know about word’s meanings. 😊
I myself often notice similar mistakes and findthat people who compose such insriptions often fail to capture the right nuance anddescription of a certain situation.
By the way, apart from apple strudel and walnut pastry, apple pie is alsoour traditional dessert 🙂
Really?!
I can’t stop thinking about the topic of the last sent Vitamin V. A small diference can completely change the essence of understanding or happening, As, for example in dancing: a small diference in the posture of the dancer, the hug or the inclination of the chest, can mean completely different information for the dancer, resulting in different actions in the continuation or the next step.
And I finally started to think in English, even when I talk to myself. 🙂
Excellent! I just hope you don’t correct yourself when you talk to yourself.
No, of course not, when I talk to myself in English and in the best company :), I never make mistakes :), 🙂
The term ‘original’ seems to be ambiguous to me in English because it has more meanings than two or even three. On the other hand, it can be understandable in different contexts as well or it can lead to a better understanding.
That’s right. It can be confusing. Much better to learn it in context.
I think that “original crepes” and “Original Waffles’ means that they respect the original recip from those countries and traditional is something old but characteristic for a zone, country, people. Like “this popular costume is traditional ( ex. for this country) or the crepes are traditional (for French people).
I’m sure that’s what they meant. Unfortunately, it’s not what they said.
