Thanks for your answers!
(77… I think that’s a new record)
What am I talking about?
Last week I asked you, If you could have lunch with any English-speaker, living or dead, who would it be?
The answers ranged from Keanu Reeves to Albert Einstein.
I even got a few votes!
Mr. Vig Has Dinner With…
And if I could have lunch with anyone living or dead…?
I guess I would like to have dinner with Jerry Seinfeld.
Why?
He laughs a lot.
He makes me laugh.
I think it would be a fun lunch.
A Secret Grammar Lesson
By the way…
That question…
The one about having lunch…
That little sentence has some BIG GRAMMAR.
A long time ago, when I was teaching in the language schools in Prague, I tried very hard to get my students to learn some complicated rules so they could ask and answer questions like that.
It usually didn’t work.
But you all used it correctly!
What’s the rule?
Who cares.
What’s the name of the rule?
Don’t worry about it; not important.
Just know this…
THIS is how you learn.
You read.
You listen.
You imitate (translation: you say what you hear).
And for bonus points: You enjoy it!
I have been studying English lessons including grammar in the school since I was in primary school, but when I speak, I hardly remember the rules, but by the time I found myself speak English with grammar with out thinking due to hearing the language from different sources.
In my opinion, the basic thing for correct English grammar is the thinking in English..
Before, I learned the rules of grammar in Slovak, my native langusge, but it is much more understandable in English..
👍🙏
I had learned many grammar rules under school and highschool but i forgot a lot. when I prepared me for university. I studied one hour English every night between 23:00- 00:00. I could learn too many words under one year. I could answer 99.6 % under examination. I was so proud of me. I would like I feel the same again.
I am thinkig that the secret is reading English daily wihtout translate in your language .
That’s my opinion too. Reading is very important.
Rules, rules, rules…
They aren’t so important when I want to learn speak fluently English language and any language. Why I understand quite good, why I can write quite good too and why I can’t speak as good as I would?
My native language is slovak. I speak fluently czech I learned by listening and speaking. Now I speak fluently greek I learned with the same way. By listening and speaking with native speakers. The rules cames after. The vocabulary is very important but it’s built slowly.
I agree with Henka. In speaking is more important to start thinking in English.
You listen
You speak
You imitate
You read
I have been studying English and grammar when I was in my country , like 20 years ago but did not work, know I realize that the rules it was not necessary because I never learned anything about it, know I start speking.
A question for Mr. Vig:
I know you don’t recomand gramar too much but i ‘m a little confused…
It’s also correctly to use conditional form verb, first person I WOULD LIKE instead I SHOULD LIKE?
Thank you so.much!
“Would like” is much more common than “should like.” I never say that. I think only English people who live in castles and marry their cousins say that.
Simpatico Mr Vig 😊
Credo Silvia che tu voglia dire I would invece di I would like?
Scusa ma con la traduzione le leggo uguali !
When you use casual English the most important things would be producing understandable English and keeping the conversation active, hence the grammar roles are not priority in this context.
In official ocations where you should manifest authority, eloquence, confidence the roles, the grammar frames are anavoidable segments of generating speech& writing English.
I like read your letters. Kind regards.

My English is rather poor, but I wait for your letter and read it with big pleasure. And (it seems to me :)) every day I undersend English more and more.
Thank you very much.
ENTUSIASM
Yes, you are right. Imitation is the best method for learning the languages. The children learn their mother language with the same method! Thank you, Mr. Vig, for these your mails, I love them. 🙏
You are very welcome!
I love your style.
Imitațion is the best form for learning the English language. I love your style. Thanks mr. Vig
I’m very glad to have this opportunity with U – read your letters and thinking about questions😊
think in English is the key for me
Ho studiato inglese per 5 anni , più ripassato con le figlie nel loro studio, iscritta ad ulteriori corsi ed inoltre esercitata per conto mio .
Mi rendo conto che mi manca effettivamente la conversazione .
Ebbene sì le regole base ci stanno . Poi come tutte le lingue bisogna viverle . Lanciarsi , pasticciare ,sbagliare …
Fino ad arrivare a una vera e propria sicurezza .
