A conversation on Skype tonight with a French friend:
HIM: Yeah, I don’t really want to be here anymore.
ME: Why’s that?
HIM: I don’t know, maybe it’s the city. Maybe it’s the language. I just don’t like speaking French.
(He’s living in Belgium with his Czech girlfriend.)
ME: You don’t like speaking French? But you are French…
HIM: I know but I’m a different person when I speak English. I’m more outgoing. I’m friendlier. I don’t know… Is that strange?
I’ve heard the same thing from a Dutch friend and a Polish friend.
They’re different when they speak English.
They’re more confident, more outgoing, friendlier…
They do and say things in English they would not usually do in their native language.
Are they crazy?
What do you think?
How do you feel when you speak English?
Are you a different person?
A better person?
I want to know!
Please share your story in the comments below.
Thanks!

Yes I agree with them. I feel different person
It ´s so funny for me now, because I thought about this yesterday. I realized the same when I chat with my english teacher. My reasoning of this is that in this case (when I speak other language) my priority isn´t the content, but to speak English – the ability to say it in English.
Or may be say that when you speak in other language, you are able to speak about yourself with distance – like about somebody else.
But I think it si not general rule, it depends also on personal sympathy.

Hello
Of course there is a clear difference. English gives you the opportunity to work, then money and self-confidence. Many of my country dreams of emigrating to Europe or America, and I am among them if I find a sure way.
English is good. Today many young people use it to work on the Internet with foreigners.
Yes, I feel different when speak English with some of my colleagues and they tend to change it back to Mandarin. But I want to sleek more English to improve it over time.
I feel the same. I just realized when I read your story 🙂

When I speak English, I’m feel embarrassed, because I don’t speak it very well.
