You know the difference between left brain and right brain, right?
Righ brain thinking sees connections and patterns.
Left brain thinking likes rules and order.
Right brain: surfer, philosopher, yoga teacher.
Left brain: accountant, doctor, engineer.
Most of my students are big left-brain thinkers.
I think I know why…
GREETINGS FROM THE LAND THAT CHRISTMAS FORGOT
Hello from Turkey.
Did you know it’s almost Christmas?
I totally forgot!
I wonder why…
Could it be because I’m on an island in a Muslim country…. hmm.
I remember once in Prague I saw a store putting up their Christmas lights in October.
October!
Anyway, I’ll be back in Europe soon and will enjoy the lights, the music and the decorations at just the ideal time for that — in December!
TURN OFF YOUR BRAIN
Last year I read a book called “Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain”
The author asks the reader to do this experiment:
- copy a drawing of a face
- copy another drawing of a face, but this time as you draw, say the words of the part of the face you’re drawing, ex. “nose… mouth… chin…”
The result is that the first drawing is always better and easier.
Why is that?
Because you’re not thinking, you’re just copying.
I’ve seen the same with my students.
When a student thinks about the words and the grammar, it’s harder.
But go to a bar in Dublin, have two pints of Guinness, meet a friendly tourist from America whom you’ll never see again, and the conversation will be easier.
Situation one: left brain is on
Situation two: left brain is off
So want to speak better?
Turn off the left side of your brain.
I completely agree with you. Some years ago a friend of mine had to assess her knowledge of English after some language classes at work. She was quite nervous, so I gave her a…shot! The drink made the trick, she chilled out and the test went really well!
Pimsleur (the guy who created all the Pimsleur courses) said there’s no rule against learning a language with a martini in your hand.
Happy Christmas Vig, hope you will have a healthy, whealty, dinamyc New year. Thanks for the knowladge.
Interesting.
