Do you have kids?
Do you want them to master the English language?
Here’s a recent email I received from a reader:
I want to help my daughter who is 12 years old. She has weak English skills. Can she take your course?
Here’s what I told her:
Thank you for your email.
Unfortunately, I don’t have experience teaching kids.
But I have noticed a few things about how kids learn.
And I don’t think the solution is the school or the teacher or the course.
My niece took Spanish lessons in school for ten years.
She doesn’t speak Spanish.
The kids who end up speaking English comfortably have English-speaking friends… or they have hobbies which require English…. or they love English-language TV or films or music or video games…
Isn’t it the same for adults?
For sure it´s valid even more for the adults .I watch videous about medical sience ( as in Czech there is only limited such as videous) and about history. It means mainly ( 80 % ) just listening and UNDERSTANDING the matter. 15 % reading 5 % writing notes and No speaking. I have expected chating in your lessons.
Thank you, I think you are right.
I agree 👍
Yes, as children do we need to listen and listen again and again
Listening teach us pronunciation new words but also grammar and rules – it’s an indirect learning.
It works! Mr Vig method works! It’s amazing!
Hi!I’m from Hungary, I’m language teacher. My first language is Russan, second German. Without school lessons I lived more time in this countries… I worked cca 45 years as teacher in several Hungarian schools, then at the uni, here I given business language lessons. If you learn e.g. Japan or China language, you need a teacher to learn writing and reading, pronunciation … later people to speak … plus films, tv, hobbies etc. and teacher to correctly expertise speaking. Now I learn English. As third language I take other way… not step by step, I have experience, techniques, methods, see films etc…Unfortunately I have not English-speaking friends. Without Mr Vig’s E-mails I have teacher ones in the weeks half hour I speak with them English. Summer I have a trip to Scotland…That are my chance…
Mr.Vig, I think what you said are absolutely right!! My 12-year-old daughter speaks English literally as a native speaker, after she love watching English video on YouTube and TikTok
My son and his generation had start study by computer, where they use just english, and they all love computers that’s why they need english, he likes to play on gitar english songs, cause his friends do the same and there again english!!!
And finally he looks films in english(mamy as well) And finally I had never teach him english cause he knew better…
.
I Like listening music with lyrics IT helps me.
Old school methods don’t teach speaking. My daughter learns English in and out of school but she does not speak.
It was in video training, great knowledge👍
Confident Conversation Master and now Speaking School👍
Like you already said, it’s good to learn English wich such an enthusiasm as you are a kid and also use his tools.
I didn’t learn English at school either. In the classes, I tried but I didn’t make any progress. I admit that I don’t know English well, but I mostly learned from movies, music, magazines… The most important thing is that you are interested and that you like it.
I took my son to Oxford, where Harry Potter was filmed, which at the time all the children read, but on the condition that he would be my interpreter during the trip (buying tickets, food…). And since then I had no problem motivating him to learn English.
Cool story!
Thanks for comment. Finally at that time also he decided to go to OXFORD university and eventually graduated there.
My 8 years old son is better than me in English! He learned by waching TV. He is the best i his class on English lessons! Now he often change language – from LT to EN when we are watching movie😀 sometimes Iam worried about LT language skills now!
The same with adults. Only one bad thing – we don’t have enough time for watching, reading, listening. That’s why it take more time to learn for adults😔
Today, children have a great formula and incentives to study English through attractions such as video games, remote communication with foreign friends, favorite music with lyrics, YouTube, and podcasts in English. This is fully valid for adults too, if they create new habits to study English excitingly.
Yes 100% correct
Practice, listen and take every opportunity you have to speak and listen! Ok you make mistakes but it is a positive opportunity to learn too isn’t it?
