The fundamental question is:
Is English a subject or is it a skill?
Let me explain.
Biology is a subject.
But basketball is a skill.
If something a subject, then you can learn it in school.
Sign up for the class. Read the book. Take the test. And you’re done.
If it’s a skill then you’ve got to practice. You’ve got to do it. You’ve got to fail. You’ve got to get feedback. And you’ve got to try again. Preferably every day.
And if it’s a subject, then the primary aim of the teacher is to give knowledge.
But if it’s a skill, then the primary aim of the teacher is behaviour change.
I believe English is a skill.
What do you believe?
