“Milk is for babies. When you grow up you have to drink beer.”
-Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film Pumping Iron
I had beers with a friend last week.
We started to talk about learning languages.
He said his parents used to be addicted to Duolingo.
They did it every day.
Then one day, it was over. Finished. Kaput.
They finished Duolingo!
I had never heard of that before.
And then I asked the obvious next question:
“So how is their English?”
“Well, they’re not finished with English,” he replied.
The Next Step
Training wheels…
Water wings…
Milk…
Eventually, you have to grow up.
You have to take the next step.
Duolingo is a great start.
But there’s a next step.
This is what I do.
I take adults from intermediate (post-Duolingo), to confident English speakers.
You can learn more about my three-step system here:

Hi Ryan, my wings are a paper dictionary. Where I write down all the new words. Because I like to write and I remember everything better when I write down anything.

I totally agree with you that milk is for children and beer for adults, instead I prefer yogurt, I think is healthier
I remember from Latin class the saying “Festina lente”.
I have somehow adopted these baby steps for myself and bigger steps sometimes make me a little nervous. But still I want to move forward!
One big step for me was to start speak out loud.
Hi, Hi, Hi, i hate duolingo, i can’t understand why people are addicted, i’m addicted of VV.
Hi,
I don’t know Duolingo.
I know I’m not a child anymore because I can bike, I can swim, I have replaced cow’s milk with vegetable milk and I always have a beer with a chinese or japonese dinner ! I did grow up : I’m a Vig Village Citizen ;))
