“When are you going to settle down?”
That question makes me sneeze, cough and start itching.
Perhaps I’m allergic.
“Settle down” means you get a house, you get a 9-5 job, you get a family, and then one day you wake up and you’re already dead!
No thanks.
But now I know you can have a family and still travel.
Meet Liz
Last week I attended Bansko Nomad Fest.
Over 700 travelers came to this small town to meet, learn and have fun.
One woman I met was an American named Liz.
Liz has three kids.
And they’ve been travelling the world for many years.
It’s called “world schooling.”
And she’s not the only one!
Many families these days are choosing to be nomadic.
They teach their children themselves, or they put them in local schools for a few months or years, or they go to communities for other nomads and a teacher lives with the families.
As Liz says, the school system was created in a different age. It was created to make factory workers, and then office workers. It teaches facts, which you quickly forget, not skills you need.
Plus, after the kids learn the regular subjects like history and science, they learn about people, culture, languages just by being in a foreign country.
Sounds good to me!
Sounds good to me too. I have 2 kids. 🙂 I love travelling, but I’m not a nomad.
Makes sense and seems optimistic…🌞
World schooling sounds very interesting but I don’t know any family who lives with nomadic way. The”Settle down” way of living is more common. The reasons are many.
Can you imagine the world in which all the people and families are nomad?
The answer is somewhere in middle.
Your topic is very interesting but very huge to be analysed
I agree with Liz. The school’s goal is to learn children how to become good workers who serve the system. However the education system is obligatory. No one can become a scientist by travelling, but it’s true, world schooling is more intresting by far….
Hello, I know and I agree with it that from psychological point of view the most important for kids is to be with mother in stable way, mostly emotionaly stable… living..it seems to me that one place is important…but after fruits you can recognize them…
Nomand life is my dream 😉
I think the school system does not let children to develop. But unfortunetelly we do t travel to try something else.
I like very much stories, especialy phantasy stories because l they feed the imagination and the creativity. Now, I’m reading SHADOW AND BONE by Leigh Bardugo , in .English.It’s a great story that the.icentral dea. is the contrast and the.complementarity between dark and light
PHANTASY ??? I don’t no!!!
Really I think these books that we call
PHANTASY have another language for reading.
Hi Mr.Vig.
Your stories are getting more interesting every day. Very exciting! Indeed, in addition to the fact that each your story is very necessary for me as English, they also have good effect on my mood. Thanks!
Though it sounds fascinating, you have to admit that nomads can only exist because the rest of the “settled” people produce everything the they need to exist as nomads.
He Mr Vig
I can’t agree more! The idea of world schooling and nomadic life appeals to me A LOT! I teach children who go to a traditional school. They do have certain limitations. And here the teacher’s huge role is to give them a proper knowledge of English. Fortunately for me, I do not have to follow the curriculum. On the other hand, they want me to prepare them for tests or exams which have nothing in common with real-life English. What do you think about it?
I think that’s great that you don’t have to stick to the curriculum. Let them read what they want! According to research, that’s the best way to prepare for tests.
