Meet the Swiss Army Knife word.
These words look like one simple word…
But like the knife with many blades and many tools….
These words have many meanings.
Some readers shared their favorites on the blog: fall, get, set, run, and cast.
All good words with many meanings.
So how do you learn them?
TIP 1
Here’s what NOT to do:
Learn them all at once.
The words are like the knife.
Do you need a bottle opener?
Then you use the bottle opener on the knife!
Do you need to saw some wood?
No?
Then don’t use the saw.
Use the tool and learn the word when you need it.
Example…
I was listening to a podcast this weekend.
The guest used a big, scientific word.
The podcast host stopped him and asked, What does that mean?
THAT’S how you learn a word!
Thank you, good idea and solution for me.
I agree. Thanks!
That’s very good and useful idea! Thanks!
You’re welcome!
Don’t hesitate to ask for the meaning of umknown word
Oh, I’m a strange feeling with all this sharp things/ words…however I prefer the saw for cutting woods…
But, things change, environment changes, climate, world changes, why not the sense of words?
Especially the phrasal words are indeed BIG DEAL, and I know that learning them “on the heap” doesn’t produce expected results.
I don’t use frequently phrasal words and I estimate they are weak points in my English speaking.
HI Ryan ! When You want to have personal opinions and you use words you don’t know the meaning of ,its better to keep quiet.
Cheers !
Very good point
Yes…it’s what we need, to relax also when we learn, a little bit every day, not all at once.
Stay calm, stay focus, just relax and LEARN! A little bit every day
A really good advice, a really good method and…..THANKS AGAIN MR VIG!
You’re very welcome!
Hi! Good idea and new method to learn and use words at the same time, not the old “step by step” in the traditional language books. Practically , in the real situation/ context, what do you need, that can and will you remember. Thanks!
Very good advice! THANKS!
Very usefull advise!!!
This has been a great lesson. Thanks!!
Thanks a bunch, that’s very good idea.
In conclusión, no matter if we have to ask the meaning of a word when we do not understand it and and write it down to avoid forgetting
