A new day, a new city.
I’m a travelling teacher.
Last year, it was seven countries.
This year, two countries so far.
So a common challenge when I arrive in a new city is, How do I get home?
Two Strategies For Finding Your Way Home In A New Place
The first is to ask directions.
(For this lesson, let’s pretend GPS and Google maps don’t exist, ok?)
“Go down this street, take a left at the third light, go three blocks, turn left when you see the sleeping dog…”
And what always happens?
You forget the directions and have to ask someone else for help.
The second solution is to just start walking.
You’ll make wrong turns, you’ll get lost.
But you’ll learn the city.
The second time out, you’ll make fewer mistakes because the city has become more familiar.
And soon, the way home is a familiar path.
Two Strategies For English
“How do I become fluent?”
That’s the question I get most often.
A popular strategy is to sit in a classroom, watch a YouTube teacher explain grammar rules, study, memorize, translate, etc, etc.
This is like asking directions.
You prepare, but what always happens is, you forget.
Or, like exploring a new city, you can just start walking.
You do that by using your English.
You read, you listen, you watch, you talk.
You look at your surroundings and you notice new things.
No, it’s not a straight line.
Yes, you get lost a lot and sometimes it gets dark and the wolves chase you.
But soon, the language, like the city, will have a familiar feeling.
You enter a conversation and think, “Ah, I’ve been here before.”
You’ve made English easy.
As easy as walking home.
