Americans say, “How’s it going?”
Brits say, “You all right?”
And as I just learned last week, Aussies say, “How you going?”
Three countries… one language… three ways to say the same thing.
Why not?
Your Turn
What else do Australians say differently?
Have you ever visited Australia? Met an Aussie? Seen Crocodile Dundee?
Share your Aussie English in the blog comments and we’ll continue with more Aussie English tomorrow.
I never visited Australia but seen Crocodile Dundee!
Good enough!
I have never been to Australia, but it’s interesting to know such expressions. Yes, there was such a movie…Why do you ask us, mr.Vig?
I visited Australia last year. Australians like to shorten words.
For instance “We’re going to throw some snags on the barbie on tomorrow arvo”. It means “We’re going to throw some sausages on the barbecue on tomorrow afternoon.”:-)
Try to guess what means:
ROO
SUNNIES
HALFA
AVO
TRUCKIE
this is already different language , if somebody not translate -I can’t understand.. and laguage is changing…. is alive
Yes, you are right. The language is alive, it is like a mirror of a nation. Australians are very friendly and easygoing people with specific humour. Very common expression is “No Worries”. Maybe that´s why they abbreviate words☺. I highly recommend visiting Australia. Their approach to life is contagious.
Do you still need a prison record to go there ?….
Not any more:-).
Sunnies is sunglasses?
YES!
Huuuhh????
Kangaroo
Sunglasses
Half of
Avocado
Truck driver
If I had visited Australia, I would have seen Crocodile Dundee and I could have spoken with him in Crocodilish.☀️
Never met a live Aussie. (in the past I’ve misunderstood the word for an Aspie )
Crocodile Dundee is an oldie but goodie, you can see it repeatedly, some of the scenes are hilarious!
ROO = kangaroo
SUNNIES = sunglasses
HALFA = half an hour
AVO = avocado
TRUCKIE = truck driver
As to greetings, Australians instead of “Good day!” say “G´day!” and very often add “mate”. “Mate” is like “guy”.
“Hey, how ya goin’?” = How are you?
Well, Australian English is a challenge. My son has been living in Australia for over three years, thanks to him I know all of these weird words ☺ .
