On Sunday, I found a wallet on the ground.
Someone else might consider this good luck.
They could go on a shopping spree!
But I wanted to do the right thing.
I wanted to make sure a thief didn’t find it.
And I wanted to help the owner get it back.
Two years ago I left my phone in the back of a London taxi.
What a headache that was!
If only some kind person had returned it to me…
So I picked up the wallet and looked inside.
No email. No phone number.
Just a Canadian ID, bank cards and exactly one US dollar.
So how was I going to reach her?
Here was my plan: I’d find her online, tell her I had found her wallet, and then mail it to her the next day so she wouldn’t have to cancel her cards and get a new ID.
But first, I had to get home.
No internet access in the mountains of West Virginia.
Two hours later, back home, I started my search but couldn’t find her!
She wasn’t on Facebook, Instagram, Google, LinkedIn…
So I asked AI for some help.
It said, call her bank and tell them to give her your contact info.
I called.
A woman in the Philippines took my number and said she would call her.
I ate dinner and waited, but no phone call.
I said goodnight to my father and went upstairs to read.
At 10 PM there was a knock on the door.
It was the police.
To be continued….
P.S.
