Good morning.
How was your weekend?
Mine was good.
I decided to stay in— ha!
Saturday I worked. Not much else to do.
But Sunday I made myself take some time off.
I read some fiction. I went on a walk. I watched an “old” movie with my dad (“The Dirty Dozen” from 1967)
And I practiced my newest hobby.
Here I am in a practise video I made.
If you’re looking for a hobby, and you’ve got some outside space, I can really recommend archery. I wouldn’t call it “exercise” but it gets you outside, it’s relatively inexpensive, and it’s quite challenging. It looks easy in the movies. But once you get past twenty yards, it’s hard to hit the bullseye (that’s what we call the center of the target).
My goal is to improve a little every day.
Just a little.
So I watch some videos on Youtube and do what they tell me to do.
On one hand, Youtube is amazing. One guy I like is this German guy who lives in Malta. What would it cost if I flew out to Malta to get a lesson? Yet now I can stay home and get lessons from him for free. Amazing.
But there’s just one problem: In one lesson he talks about the release, in another lesson he talks about where to look, and in yet another he talks about where to put your head.
I know from my first golf lesson as a kid, when the teacher said, “Do this, this, this, this and this. And now hit the ball” that trying to do everything at once is a disaster.
Much better to focus on one thing at a time.
And in the correct order.
That’s what I’m missing in archery.
What should I focus on first?
If Youtube has the answer, I haven’t found it yet.
But I do have the answer for you and your English.
Re-start your English… this time in the correct order… and you’ll feel the difference.
It’s something I taught my private students in Prague.
