How was your afternoon?
I spent half the day waiting in line at Thai immigration.
When you enter the country you can stay for 30 days.
If you want to stay longer — so you can spend more money in the country — you have to wait in line for four hours.
Does that make sense to you?
Anyway, while I was waiting, I snapped this photo for you:
If you can’t read it, it says:
“Protector of the People
Repression
Serve the People.”
Repression?
Is that the right word?
“To repress” means to use force to not allow people to have freedom and rights.
Of course, in some countries the governments repress the people…
But they usually don’t make signs and advertise it!
Even communist China calls itself a republic.
Maybe Google translate gave them wrong word…
HI Ryan !
I think we are entering the political zone and moving away from our goal : The English language and improve it.
Don’t you improve the language of you discuss about the politics?
In the context of what was notified, I think the appropriate term was “suppression” with reference to the suppression of illegal/criminal actions… and not of repression and restriction of rights and freedoms.
Of course, you are right, Google did not make the “legal” difference between the terms.
About waiting in line for 4 hours, what can I say? It’s just that we lived like this before 1989, under the communist dictatorship in Romania… Unpleasant situation!…
In the rest, all the best for you, my teacher😍🙏👍
Ah, that makes sense!
LOL
Hi Ryan!
One word can be scary, it made me speechless.
I`m getting a little scared of Google now.
Hope your four hours passed in an air-conditioned room and everything went well.
Hmm, very interesting .. Author of these words repressed someting probably.. 😊🫣 Slip of the tongue.. S. Freud could say here something more.. . For me it is very funny story.. Why are you surprised so open communication Ryan 😉🙈😊
Anyway, I wonder to find out it seems we have many words” and .also many civilisation on the Earth, so different each of others and ready to return in the old times. About these, I think we cannot evolve without overcoming the old times and our desire to return and repair things. But however, could we return and change the past ?
As I know the same unpleasant situation occurs in many other immigration offices not only in Thailand. In Russia, Germany and even in Israel the same. Visitors have to stay in line many hours, sometimes in not the best conditions. It seems to me that officials want to show us how “small “you are instead of your money, social status and so on comparing the power of state
Democracy is the polity where power originates from the people, is exercised by the people and serves the interests of the people.
In any case, each republic decides for itself, for the authorities that govern and represent it in the UN, their will is not repression and it is not imposed by the imperialists (USA) such as, for example, Thailand.
In any case, the use of the word democracy is an insult
from the country that bombs and kills anyone who does not agree with it.
“Protector of the People
Repression
Serve the People.”
Perhaps, it’s not a wrong meaning but an attempt to establish “the carrot and stick” approach …
I think it was wrong Google translation. But it doesn’t sound friendly))
Your opinion is wrong-and tipical ammerican’s-best argument is money-stranger with money-why is hi better then others? It’s wrong God-God of money.
I think that the meaning is not depression of thinking or behaving but blocking your mind to terrible and in pleasant memories.
I think it’s not politics but if it was, why we are so afraid from open mind and from the real situations in the world? Via learning English in this group, we can learn something more important “what happening around us”
