Hello from America!
I’m back home for Christmas.
And home is on the east coast, near Washington D.C., in the lovely state of…
Virginia
Did you know….
Virginia was where the British Empire started?
While the Spanish and Portuguese were getting rich in South and Central America, the Brits sailed over to see if they could make some money, too.
Their very first colony was on an island near North Carolina called Roanoke.
But that colony disappeared; we still don’t know what happened to the people living there.
The second colony, called “Jamestown”, named after King James, was in Virginia.
That also was a disaster.
But it later became successful when one of the colonists discovered that 1) tobacco grows well in Virginia, and 2) lots of Europeans wanted to buy tobacco.
So think about that…
Without Virginia, there may not have been a British empire.
And without a British empire, maybe you’d be learning another foreign language instead of English… (German? French? Icelandic?)
It seems that tobacco was the cornerstone of our civilization.
Exactly!
I gave stars to history!
History is always interesting.
I don’t want to think about tobacco for very long, because I hope the story of tobacco will end soon!
Why not Spanish?
Do you have something against the Spanish language?
And why not Italian? 🙂
Yes, as always – brief, clear and most importantly – witty. And a quick historical overview provided. Thanks Ryan!
Merry Christmas!
P.S. Do elves also visit America? Just look inside the slipper.
Merry Christmas!
we are lucky that we have English .
Yes, history is always interesting .We can learn from it. Also bad things like tobbaco. We could be smarter and stop smoking in the future. If there were not be Brithish Empire there were be some other Spanish Portugese , French State Empire.. who know ?
Hello Mr. VIG, why did you say ” very first”. What does very mean hear?
i don’t know. But the best language is THE ITALIAN
What a pity for French language, that could have been spoken all over the US, i could have been an English teatcher, like what you do Ryan.
I could have been a French teatcher (instead English, it’s my mistake)
as you do in English Ryan
And I mean the trade of tobacco(as you like or not)has his contribution to the building of The British Empire and is one of the pages of Black History…but I supose there were Native Americans too in Jamestown because as I know tobacco growing was one of their activities
Interesting story, maybe a legend?
Why not persian?
Do you have something against the Iranian language?
