Hotels are boring.
I’ve never had an adventure in a hotel.
I’ve never met an interesting person in a hotel.
But private apartments…
Well, I’ve got stories.
Adventures While Cooking
Like last night, I was cooking dinner and started a conversation with another guest (we have private rooms but share a common kitchen).
And what a coincidence – he’s also an English teacher!
“Where are you from?” I asked.
“Moscow,” he said.
“And where do you teach?” I asked.
“Hanoi,” he said.
“Where do you teach?” he asked.
“In my room,” I said, pointing to the door a few feet away.
Wow, I thought. That’s a long way to travel to get to work.
Modern Methods
A teacher who travels to see his students…
Students who travel to see their teacher…
Teachers who write rules with pieces of chalk…
Students who memorize and take tests.
And both students and teachers scratch their heads and wonder why English is so slow.
My nephew used to date a girl who sold horses.
Horses.
Not cars.
But she was a smart girl.
She didn’t wonder why the car was faster than the horse.
