A sunny Sunday afternoon.
Sitting in a cafe with a friend having lunch.
At a nearby table, a couple of Brits.
One of them heard we were also speaking English.
So leaned over to us and made a comment.
I smiled, nodded, and thought to myself “What did he just say?”
My friend also smiled and nodded.
But then turned to me, and in a low voice asked, “What did he say?”
And my friend is English!
Can’t understand the English sometimes?
Don’t feel bad.
It happens even to the English.
Yes it can happen !
It may be( from, to ,cause ? 😅) the accent of the original country .
I think it happens with all languages !
Probably!
Yeah, all the time!
The story fits the best to us the “timeless” 😊English learners.
Reading this story, it is surprising and a bit strange to me, and I could not leave out to mention, that this kind of misunderstanding rarely can occur with Hungarians. It is because Hungarian is a strictly regulated and phonetic language and so the words and expressions are written and also expressed with the same sounds and the same mood when speaking as they are defined by the letters and the word order. That is why, the number of exceptions from the main rule is much less as opposed to the huge amount of exceptions we must handle in English. So, Dear Ryan and all the Polygots, next time try to be familiar with another sort of language like the precisely phonetic Hungarian! 🙂
Interesting. But that requires everyone to learn and follow the rules. Because the natural state of language is change.
You are right! Such situations exist with all languages 🙂
And what did he say? Did you ask for a repeat?
No, it wasn’t important. Just small talk probably.
Yes indeed You are right I have difficulties watching tv to understand when people are talking in English, k
