A few years ago, my sister told me she wanted her son to learn Spanish.
She asked for my advice.
I told her, Why bother?
None of his friends speak Spanish.
He’s not interested in Spanish-language music or TV.
He doesn’t even like tacos.
Is he really going to spend the hundreds of hours that are necessary to learn a foreign language?
As we say in English, Fat chance.
The Younger Generation
It’s a different story with the younger generation in Europe.
As one reader put it, It seems like the younger generation is born with English.
Yet here you are…
(The teenagers can now leave the room.)
You didn’t watch Cartoon Network when you were in diapers.
You didn’t have YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat, or Twitter glued to your hand.
And you probably didn’t get to au pair or wait tables in Nottingham for the summer.
Yet here you are.
You’re improving your English every day while many others quit long ago…
(reaching out through the internet to give you a high five)
I am agree the younger generation is born with English and they are really good.
Thx for a high five:) – it’s very kind of you.
I learned a many years English just alone and I realized that, this is a never ending story… So if i want to step up to the next level, I will need a proffesional help.
And ‘you found me on instagram’:)…
Thats exactly, The new generation grew up with English because they were hearing English very often
Yes, it’s true, because of watching films, playing games, chating by mobile phones using an internet and IT technology the new generation can learn English from childhood.
Ryan please what does it mean… Wait tables in Nottingham… I cannot imagine. Thank you.
It’s what waiters do. They wait tables.
😂
I think that any other foreign language learned is a benefit for you, but the desire to learn that language must come from your head and soul. In America there are many Spanish speakers, especially in south. Who knows if your nephew is going to stay forever at his home or generally in North America. Spanish is a very spread language in many countries. But the decision to learn Spanish (in this case) must be his decision.
What can I do, I already know 4 languages and I need to know how to speak English but two of the 4 mix with English when I try to speak. And then out comes an English-Italian-German or vice versa. It’s very difficult for me. 🤣
Lucky you! Just imagine yourself as a Italina, or German.
Kids have it easy today, Twitter, snaöchat, Youtube Stick on hands
I agree with you. English is common language on the internet. But not only young generation learn English. Everyone has a mobile, computer and smart TV. There are many people who learn Spanish, Turkish and even Chinese just through the internet.
I don’t like Spanish but many people like. I wanted to learn Turkish, and I tried a little, sometimes it is spontaneous choice
I think that any language learned is a benefit. I know 3 languages and I need to know haw to speak English.
True! For youngers it’s extremely easy to learn English! When I was young it was very difficult to learn a foreing language as there wasn’t internet or e-dictionairys and I had to spend so much time to look up for unknown words and grammar.Above all there wasn’t any audio video for someone to listent to the correct pronunciation.
It’s a reality
English is definitely the dominant language (at least for now), this does not mean that someone who knows it should not learn another language.
Iam feeling enjoy when I reading the lesson .
