You know those big, yellow school busses in American movies?
Well, I used to take one of those to school every day.
And every morning, I had to walk from my house to the bus stop down the street.
If I got there early, I would have time to talk with my friends and maybe skateboard in the parking lot or throw rocks at trees.
But that almost never happened.
Because, I was always late.
Not a good habit, I know. But at least all that running made me a fit kid.
However one day, I didn’t run fast enough, because when I got to the end of my street, there was the bus already closing its doors and driving away.
I then had to go back home, ask my mom to drive me, and hope she drove fast enough so I wouldn’t walk into class late and experience every child’s greatest fear-embarrassment.
A bad way to start the day.
Anyway, I thought of this because it reminds me of the stories I hear from my students.
Everything in their life was fine.
They went to work… they talked to people… they made money…they went home.
Easy.
But then one day the bus arrived.
And suddenly, they had the opportunity to go further.
The bus went to a bigger world… a more exciting world… a richer world…
But sadly, not everyone can get on the bus.
First, you have to tell the driver where you want to go.
And he only speaks English.
