Last night, some friends came over for poker.
After the game (I lost), we watched the Starship launch on TV.
While the rocket was falling back to Earth, an Italian guy asked me for advice on changing his accent.
“Wow,” I thought. “Just the other day, several of you said the Italian accent was your favorite!”
One reader even wrote: “The Italian accent is for my ears, like a tiramisu or a napolitane pizza for my stomach”
Is no one satisfied?!
Americans want to sound more European.
Europeans want to sound more British.
The Brits want to sound like Londoners.
And Londoners?
I don’t know.
Everyone I met in London wasn’t from London…
Anyway, the English expression for this is, “The grass is always greener on the other side.”
I guess that’s just human nature.
Next question: What would you focus on if you never had to worry about your accent? (You can answer this on the blog, or just think about it during the day.)
“..the rocket was falling back to Earth…” Falling back? That was a precise, controlled maneuver, not a fall, right?
I would concentrate my attention on the words :how many words in english I use by speaking
I should tell, I never worried about my accent.
Moving to America I have bin focused to learn and adopt the American way of life as soon as possible what is about to understand rules and regulations as well the culture and improve my English.
I didn’t find as important to be focused on my accent. For certain professions accent is “must” “ but not for mine. The bottom line is that I never had any problem communicating with people based on my accent. Some American liked my accent some used it as a fact that I am not from English speaking countries and than they used to start conversation with me asking where I was coming from what opened door for me to have the conversation in English.Great experience in all!
It’s not worth it to worry about an accent because it’s not a vice like a gambling game.
If I had to worry about my accent, I would pay attention on phonetics and especially the stress of each new word I learn.
I have never had worry for my accent. I have a clear pronunciation , maybe a little bit greek accent. 😉😁My big problem is that I am not enough good in grammar and vocabulary. So, I want focus on vocabulary and I hope in the future be more good in grammar.
Hi , I find that the accent has a charm the important things is to understand each other for the communication ,I like my accent 😉
Accent is unique and every accent has a charm itself . It’s amazing to hear different accent 😀
After two days of reading about Italien accent I have to just laugch.
My husband works for a bank that has a headquater in Italy. Yesterday both of us had homeoffice. He had a meeting with some of Italien colleagues and he switched on the mute on his computer that I could hear “the sweet Italien accent” as my husband said. It seems Italien accent is a WINNER! 🙂
PS: By husband did not know about this accent topic at all.
I don’t care too much about my accent. There are so many of them. I would like to speak correctly, so everybody could understand me. Anyway, one cannot speak like native person, unless you live there for a long time. If I can compare with Croatian language, the accent is almost always noticed. Maybe actors and musicians can imitate better.
For me, the biggest problem is not accent. The focus of my worries is when I can’t find the right words to express the right meaning
The accent is problematic for native spiker’s ears.
For us, who speak English as a second or third language, the accent is of secondary importance.
