Things change.
Last December I changed homes.
I was living in Baltimore, not far from my current home in Virginia.
I was working inside a company, taking a break from teaching, seeing what
business lessons I could learn.
That lasted almost exactly one year.
They decided they didn’t want me and I wasn’t sad one bit.
Baltimore, as we say in English, is not my cup of tea.
Nor is working in an office.
But I came back this weekend to visit friends.
The first change I noticed was that everyone wears masks — inside or
outside, homeless or employed, it didn’t seem to matter. One women even
wore ski goggles to cover her eyes…
Walking from the train station, the streets seemed a little less crowded.
I passed by the deli where I used to buy a salad on my lunch break — it was
closed.
I walked past one of my favorite bars — the sign on the window told me
that black lives matter.
I walked past the office building where I sat every day from 8 till 6 — it was
dark and empty at 1 PM on a Friday.
Finally, I reached my friends’ house.
At least they were the same.
But then they told me they’re moving to Dublin.
Oh, and they hope to have a baby soon.
Well, things change.
What’s next?
I don’t know.
A pill that makes everyone instantly fluent in English…?
Would you take it?
Or do you enjoy learning English?
Do you enjoy the challenge? Do you enjoy your routine? Do you get
satisfaction from making yourself a better person?
Because before the pill comes, you’ll need all those things to be successful
with English.
And because you read these daily lessons, I think you must…
