“What does ‘deal’ mean?”
One of my Vig Village members asked me this question during our weekend Zoom.
“Well,” I said. “It’s not so simple.”
Sometimes a word means one thing.
Other times, it’s a verb, it’s a noun, it’s slang, or add this or that preposition and — hey! — it’s something new again!
I call these words “Swiss Army Knife Words.”
It looks like one thing.
But it’s actually a saw, a corkscrew, a screwdriver, a toothpick, scissors….
Deal is one of those words.
Can you think of any other Swiss Army Knife Words?
Share in the comments below.
Then tomorrow, we’ll talk about how to deal with this challenge.
Oh!
And are you Swiss?
Were you in the army?
Did you use this knife?
If yes, please share your story on the blog. I’ve always wondered about this knife….

A few years ago I walked into the Queen’s gallery in London. I had a Swiss army knife in my backpack. The clerk found the knife and I was supposed to throw it in the bin. Since it was a gift from my son, I refused. He called the cops and they forced me or I would go to jail.
I’m so sorry!
I would say a word “stuff” is a ninja weapon for me…using that a lot describing things I do not know or can’t remember the meaning. 🙂
Oh, I don’t know English at a such level to recognise a word as a Swiss Army knife , but I can say this is a skill, not a simple word; it could be useful to learn to manage with all its senses

Our family has been on several winter vacations in Lombardy, in the town of Livigno, which is a duty-free zone and borders Switzerland. Shopping during the holidays was very different and of course affordable. One of the interesting items was the aforementioned Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, which is truly versatile, mobile and indestructible, in short a good annual purchase. It can be used for a decade after purchase.
i have a large swiss army knife with 20 functions. It was given to me many years ago by my partner from Switzerland. He said: For survival. I understand your comparison of some words to a swiss army knife…
My Swiss Army Knife is “issue”
Hello! It is very interesting topic. I read the story of Swiss Army Knife. I know, it’s coming from Swiss from 1890. The thing is a very small, multifunctional and practical tool, used about 120 years in the Army. I was never in the army, but I had become from business partners this thing. I have one in my bag on the trip, but by fly checking can be dangerous. Swiss Army Knife is a metaphor to, it’s mean things what we use f.e in “emergency” all-days situation, or in abstract meaning.
There is a mobile application by the same name with many tools.
I think ‘get’ is ideal example of Swiss army knife word. So many meanings…
The first model of the Swiss Army Knife, Modell 1890, was equipped with a knife blade, a reamer a can opener and a screwdriver. The best Swiss Army knives hide up to 70 interesting functions. You have anything you can think of. They are not suitable for knife throwers.
