I just had an interesting conversation.
The morning lectures had just ended.
And I was walking to lunch with an American woman.
She told me she speaks Hebrew and Arabic.
And she’s neither Jewish nor Muslim!
She just likes languages.
But guess what she doesn’t like?
My favorite flashcard app!
Well, as we say in English, to each his own.
DUOLINGO
Yesterday I asked you if you used and liked any language-learning apps.
The results were mixed: some of you used them, some of you didn’t; some liked them, some didn’t.
Here’s my personal opinion on Duolingo.
It’s improved a lot over the past few years.
There’s a reason why so many people use it: it’s fun and easy.
I think it’s a good introduction to a new language.
But eventually, you’ve got to take the next step.
You’ve got to listen to native-speaker content (podcasts, TV, audiobooks, radio…) and you’ve got to start speaking to humans.
Duolingo is like splashing around in the shallow end of the pool with the other kids.
Eventually, you’ve got to join the grown-ups at the deep end of the pool.
Make sense?
Have a great weekend!
Mr. Vig
P.S.
What are you doing this weekend?
