I learned a new word this week.
And it was an English word!
I was reading a story about Nelson Mandela.
As you probably know, he’s famous because he spent years in prison before he become President of South Africa.
The word I didn’t know was “gaol.”
Any idea?
It means “jail.”
Same pronunciation, just with a crazy British spelling.
So what did I do next?
Did I get depressed?
Did I get angry?
Did I throw the book out the window because there are still English words I don’t know?
Of course not.
So why should you?
You’ll always be learning new English words.
What an interesting hobby you’ve found!
Yes, I will spend my time reading interesting English novel by Perl Bak.
Yeh,I know there are many English words that mean the same thing, called synonyms but I like words and never get bored to find out the meaning of an word. They are, don’t know ,like colours in a painting, you can built something with them or find out informations about things.Even crossed words are a nice and relaxing game.
Sometimes I don’t know how to pronounce some words like native speaker does vs. I was taught in school (e.g. instead of z).
I knew this word, I suppose that it is the translation of the French word “geôle” but I has no idea how to pronouce it !
You are right Ryan. After six months as a VV member, you completely changed my thoughts about improving English. The feeling of a dull, tedious never ending learning English is behind me. Now thanks to all the tools you gave me, I see the glass as half full and it’s a pleasure to learn every day new words, expressions, idioms… in a funny, cool, unstressed way. It’s a kind of magic. Thank you.
Wow!
Learning English has become my new hobby 🙏😘
Yes,I’ll continue learning words every day!
