Yesterday, I asked you to tell me what you think happened to Jim Thompson.
Thank you for your answers.
Many of you suppose he was killed by the U.S. government.
Others suppose he got lost in the jungle and was eaten by Elvis.
But no one really knows.
Here’s what we do know:
Jim was no longer happy with his life in Bangkok.
His health was bad and he had conflicts with the Thais, the Americans and with his family.
He took a vacation with some friends to the mountains of Malaysia.
One day, they went for a picnic.
Jim left the picnic early, but didn’t explain why.
The last person to see him, a hotel employee, saw him walking into the jungle.
Jim was an experienced hiker.
He had also been trained in jungle survival by the army.
But he left his cigarettes in his room, which suggests he wasn’t planning on a long hike, since he was a heavy smoker.
Isn’t that strange?
Then night fell.
But still no Jim.
So his friends contacted the police.
In the days that followed, the Malaysian government conducted an extensive search for him.
The army, the police, dogs, helicopters…
In total, 500 men searched for ten days.
But they never found him.
Nor did they find any evidence of an animal attack.
Then, in 2022, the CIA released files on his disappearance.
But there was no helpful information in there, either.
I’m afraid this story is going to remain an unsolved mystery.
Cheers,
Mr. Vig
P.S.
The Atomic Word of the Day is “extensive.”
What does it mean?
How is it different from “big” and “large”?
And what’s the verb?
That’s what we’ll talk about in today’s Atomic Homework lesson!
