- Do English
How do you “do English”?
Well, here’s what NOT to do: study, memorize, homework, grammar exercises…
You’ve probably done hundreds of hours of those things already.
And you probably know more grammar rules than the average native speaker.
So it’s time to stop all that.
And it’s time to try something else.
It’s time to do what native speakers do.
It’s time to do what the most successful language learners in the world do.
It’s time to do what you did when you learned your native langauge.
It’s time to.. DO ENGLISH.
Some examples of Doing English:
Talking
Reading
Watching TV
Listening
That’s right — You don’t need rules and schools.
Doing English works because — and here’s the big secret the schools don’t want you to know…
Learning languages is natural.
Humans are the only creatures on the planet with an instinct for language.
What’s an instinct?
For example, birds have an instinct to fly. And they learn it without rules and schools.
That’s what humans do with language.
Isn’t that how you learned your native language?
University of California professor of linguistics, Stephen Krashen, calls this “The Natural Approach.”
MIT linguist Noam Chomsky calls it “The Language Acquisition Device.”
And I’ve seen the difference in my students. When they try rules and schools their progress is slow.
And when they switch to doing English their progress is much, much faster.
