“Different strokes for different folks.”
Ever heard that one?
If not, I’ll explain with a story about…
HANOI STREET CHAOS
Yesterday, I took a free walking tour.
A free walking tour is a great way to get introduced to a new city.
Usually, the guide is a local.
They show you things you would never see walking around on your own.
And they tell you personal stories that make the history more real.
For example, my guide yesterday not only told us the story behind a local specialty – egg coffee – we watched him make some and then we all drank it.
(I know, egg coffee sounds gross, but it’s actually delicious, like drinking tiramisu.)
Anyway, one of the guys on the tour was a young man from Dublin.
As we were crossing yet another busy intersection and trying not to get run over, I asked him how he liked the chaos of old town Hanoi.
If you’ve never been here, Hanoi is a city of 11 million people, 6 million scooters, and as far as I can tell, no traffic rules.
And because half those scooters are parked on the sidewalks, you’re forced to walk in the street with the rest of the traffic.
Personally, I find it overwhelming. It’s exciting for a few minutes, but soon I miss the spacious pavements of Prague.
But the Irish guy surprised me! His face lit up and he said, “I love it!”
And that is a perfect example of: Different strokes for different folks.
(Why “strokes”? Don’t ask me. Like so many English idioms, when you look too closely at the words, they don’t make sense.)
