“No fly tipping.”
Yes, the words are English.
But the average American doesn’t know what they mean.
I saw the sentence written on a sign when I visited London last week.
And I asked you to guess what it means.
Here are the most creative guesses.
As well as the winner of the first…
The Vig Prize For Creative Sign Interpretation
One reader guesses that it says we must respect everything that flies (including witches).
Another reader says that you must not tip / give money to flies.
And the most creative guess, and the winner of The Vig Prize:
“Assuming the rail and the sign is located over the water, it forbids you to sit on top of the rail with your back to the water and tip yourself over – (legs-up, head-down) and fly into the water..”
Congratulations, Marta!
Here is your Vig Prize:
After I took the photo, I asked a Londoner what the sign means and he told me, “Don’t dump your trash here.”
Why they use the word “fly” and the word “tipping”… that’s a mystery to me.
More UK Mysteries
Why do they call private schools “public school”?
Why do they call the afternoon snack “tea”?
And why do they drive on the wrong side of the road?
What an odd country.
I don’t understand Ryan! If my daughter, who is not native English speaker, knows what does it mean “No fly tipping”, why you don’t know this typically British expression? Ha, ha, a little joke on me….
This sign doesn’t exist in the US. Never heard it before.
Hi Ryan!
Hmm… Bansko? I guess there is no snow now, but are there any sheep left?
Cheers!
So, Brits… Why do they drive on the wrong side of the road ? Because their driving wheel is on the wrong side of their car ! Or is it the other way round ? Hmmm….
Chicken or egg ?
So, I’ve won a Vig-prize !! Wowww !
For the first time I’ve won something … no, for the second time. I’ve won children’s book when I was 9. It’s a long time ago and I completely forgot how does it feel – to win… Lovely feeling, I’ve to smile all the time !
Thank you !
Marta
You’re welcome! And thank you for playing!
Very good joking level, thanks! You made me laught….
I think it’s not a mystery, it’s because the trash is where flies can find food or let say it is a kind of tip for them
