Last week, I was at a business conference in Bangkok.
I met a lot of people.
I had a lot of conversations.
So I must have used my business English, right?
Wrong.
I used my social skills.
I smiled.
I remembered names.
I asked questions and showed interest.
I didn’t interupt or look at my phone.
And when someone said a business word I didn’t know, I ask, “What does that mean?”
Social skills will get you jobs and clients and money and opportunities.
Business English will get you a certificate.
What about you?
What’s your story with English and business?
Do you use English at work?
Do you own a business or want to own a business?
Do you want a better job?
And will better English get you there faster?
Tell me in the comments below and we’ll continue this conversation tomorrow.
I would like to learn English but I don’t have the money to do so.
I need English at work, but not very often. Sometimes I am very confortable, sometimes I translate every sentence from Slovenian to English language.
Hi Ryan,
I own a business and I have to write and read English every working day and on weekends as well.
But I absolutely agree with you regarding the social skills. They have to be at first 🙂
Always you meet new people you need social skills to connect with their emotions, feelings and their mind, to share ideas and experience.
I’m not anymore on activity but when I was on my own business, an event agency, I should probably expended my business if my english was fluently because I often worked in Switzerland… Is this sentence correctly write ?
I never owned a business, don’t want my own business or a better job. But, if you want one, then to be fluent in English could be very helpful.
My daughter is graduated in hotelmanagement. In hotels is English a good prerequisite to answer the questions of many guests.
My personal assistant is studying philosophy at the university in Salzburg. Normally we speak German in Austria, but because of the international students all lectures were held in English. Also all seminarpapers were written in English…
salut you!
I don’t have any experience in business but I really agree with you , Ryan . It’s not only in a business conversation but also in all kind of conversations. Social skill , showing our interest ,listening and smiling are very important .
Hi, I want to speak English, maybe indirectly for job.
But I also want to learn for myself, for traveling e.t.c.
However I am now working on this project so I hope you can help me to improve my best English fluency 😀
Good afternoon to everybody who read this contribution. A few weeks ago I had a private lesson with Dayna. Our topic was an interview for getting a job. I appreciated it very well. We spoke about social skills, about specific situations. After I received very interessting flashcards. I call them professional-warm. Thank you very much. I don´t use English at work but for charity project. My point of view about business is win-win situation in which all the parties benefit one way or another. There are no losers. Great grateful time to everyone.
Social skills are always important in life. We need them when we are with other people.
I’m retired, so I don’t need English at work.
