The word of the day is “ridiculous.”
When something doesn’t make sense, you can say it’s ridiculous.
Example….
Two months ago I was in Thailand.
One morning, while I sat at an outdoor cafe, fighting mosquitoes, listening to Christmas music and wiping the sweat from my face, I decided to check the forecast for Prague.
The forecast said “cold” and “snow.”
My plan was to return there for the winter.
But in my bag I only had shorts, sandals and tee shirts.
So I called my dad in the U.S. and asked him to send a box of my winter clothes.
Many weeks and emails later, the post office informed me they are almost ready to let me have my winter clothes.
They just need a few more things, like:
“a statement by the recipient about the period of use of the goods for at least 6 months prior to importation”
And another statement saying my winter clothes “will not be loaned, mortgaged, leased… for a period of at least 12 month after importation.”
So here’s what I wrote:
For the prior six months, my sweaters, boots and scarf have been sitting in my closet.
For the next twelve months, I promise not to loan, mortgage or lease my sweaters, boots or scarf.
Ridiculous.
And if anyone wants to lease my scarf in 13 months, you know where to reach me.
In many movies on Netflix, I encounter the word “ridiculous.” Unfortunately, there are a lot of real situations in the country where I live to use the word “ridiculous” in a proper way…
sometimes the rules can be absolutely ridiculous to the point of laughter
Yes, this is ridiculous. Very funny!
Have a nice weekend!
HI Ryan !
Murphy’s law applies everywhere !
If something can go wrong ,it will.
Have you a nice weekend !
“Ridiculous” situation, but at least solvable… Be glad that you haven’t encountered situations that are downright “absurd”.
So it can be even worse…no logic, no solution, no God…
Have a good weekend, Mr. Vig!
Hilarious! :-))))
I remember a conversation with a girl from other class in elementary. She told me that she often lent some of her clothes to a friend including swimsuit.
I barely hid my disbelief.
Lending a swimsuit?!
Pretty shocking, pretty ridiculous…even when it is about children!
Funny but also incredible! No!
Rules sometimes are beyond belief!
:-D, OMG
More than ridiculous situation, really. Like a fragment from a comedy film.
Your life can never be boring…
Have a nice weekend!
In Poland we say “Chech movie” when we cannot understand something because it is ridiculous..and we laugh at it…..I didn’t know that it is really true… You gave me just example for such “Chech” reality …. Maybe you should make movie about such things… or to write a new interesting book … By the way your Vit V are becoming better and better ..in my opinion ..
Maybe it’s ridiculous. But tell me how else to exclude the payment of duty…🥴
Thankii very much Mr.vig
I like the story and i had fun. Thank you. It was really interesting read the comments and useful for my English, too.
It is not ridiculous but thought-provoking fact, that someone has the opportunity to send his cloths by air mail to another continent, and another one may borrow a swimsuit from her friend. The first is too expensive to the view of the Earth, and I think the second one can be normal and not ridiculous to the view of life.
At airports, there are sometimes texts that cause ridicule.
Sometimes a sensitive person looks more ridiculios than charming.
What is the incentive for such regulation?
Perhaps these things make sense for them, who knows?…People are so different!
Mr. Vig, I love your imaginative language walks. And the lesson of your story: In an abnormal world, we cannot rely on our logic.
“Ridiculous” is a widespread word. You will find the same root in different languages. I think was originated from Latins.
Here’s how something that doesn’t make sense evoked a charming response.
And one day, when this ridiculous thing evokes such a charming reaction in more people (or at least THREE, like in the fairy tales), it will probably transform into something fantastic.
Have a fantastic Sunday!
Yes, it is realy ridiculous
