Yesterday, I told you I moved to Paris after college and learned more French in three months than in seven years sitting in classrooms.
But then I moved back to the US after a few months and…
I started to forget!
As we say in English, Use it or lose it.
What to do?
I didnât want to sit in another boring classroom.
I just needed to chat with French-speakers like I had done in Paris.
But how?
Where?
You see, there are a lot of Spanish speakers in Los Angeles.
But not so many French speakers.
And this was loooooong before social media and smart phones. I donât even think I had an email address yet.
So I quickly went from being able to pass an interview in French, to not being able to give simple directions.
And that was a pity.
Has that ever happened to you?
Did you used to have a higher level of English?
But then you forgot it after not practicing?
Let me know on the blog.
And weâll continue on Monday with some ideas how you can practice speaking English without moving to London or Los Angeles.
(Why Monday? Because about 45 Vig Village members are traveling to Prague this weekend to practice English and have fun, so Iâll be busy tomorrow.)
I want to practice English with you if it’s possible?
Hi everyone! It is naturally to learn faster English in LA or Franch in Paris 24 hours or eighteen, all day, instead of speaking only 2h per day on web. But keep going on speaking and better in same level group.đ
Thank you for taking care of us, learnersđ«
You are very clear about what you want communicate and that’s wortg great appreciation. Thank youđ
That’s true I have forgotten a huge part of upper ontermiate and adcanced level vocabulary having been made teach elementary level students.
The very best to you
I’m convinced I won’t lose English!
Thanks.
Thank you for sharing this story with us
That is true. I still forgot after any times of break.
Ok,have nice weekend in Praque
I want to practice English!
I want to practice English language but I’m very busy. I don’t have free time for myself
You had with French the same experience I am having with English. I just need practice to realize how poor my English is. Practicing leads me to learn more English words and how to use them correctly. I will be traveling to Dubai for a week and for sure I will be practicing my English âïž
Have a fun trip in Prague đ

Hi, yes I lose my english beacose I have’n practice
I want to practice english with you
My story is very similar to yours. I started learning English and French in the fourth grade of primary school. English was more popular and more convenient to use in my neighborhood, so I became fluent in English. I neglected French because I had no opportunity to speak it.
Then I moved to Germany without knowing a single word of German. I got a job and had to learn German as quickly as possible while using English in the meantime. Being in a German-speaking environment, I picked up German quickly and eventually started using only German. English got pushed aside, and somehow I lost it from my mind. I started thinking in German, and after three years, I could no longer speak English.
Now, I need English again and donât want to end up in the same situation. Thatâs one of the reasons why Iâve decided to stay in Vig village.
I lived in Germany for 1.5 years. I learned German for 4 years at school, but it was only through contact with Germans and working with them that I became fluent in German, both spoken and written. I also had contact with English and in a short time I was communicating in both languages. I came back to Poland and forgot a lot. The lessons at Vig Village are improving my communication in English. You have a good method, Ryan.
